Description
Antique Cannon Battery Placement in Forte do Rato (Mouse Fort), Tavira, Algarve, Portugal. Outside view.
Erected in the second half of the sixteenth century, at the mouth of the river Gilao, with the task of defending the port of Tavira, was under construction when King D. Sebastiao (1568-1578) visited that city, in the year 1573. It was placed under the invocation of Santo Antonio.
In the context of the War of Restoration of Independence, its structure was remodeled complementing the defense of the Fort of Sao Joao da Barra de Tavira, at the site of Gomera, which began in 1672.
The fort was active until 1840, when, lost its military function, was abandoned by order of the Governor of the province of Algarve, Brigadier Francisco de Paula Vieira da Silva Tovar, 1st Viscount of Molelos.
